{"id":3561,"date":"2023-01-30T04:34:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T12:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.goticketly.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/30\/o2-academy-brixton-inquest-could-lead-to-criminal-charges\/"},"modified":"2023-01-30T04:34:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T12:34:16","slug":"o2-academy-brixton-inquest-could-lead-to-criminal-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.goticketly.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/30\/o2-academy-brixton-inquest-could-lead-to-criminal-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"O2 Academy Brixton inquest could lead to \u2018criminal charges\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"primary\">\n<p class=\"standfirst\">DCI Nigel Penney of the Metropolitan Police has said that an investigation into the recent crowd crush at O2 Academy Brixton, where two people died as a result, has a \u201cstrong possibility of [leading to] criminal charges&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>December\u2019s Asake concert at Brixton Academy saw a number of concertgoers that did not have a ticket to the gig try to enter the venue, which led to a crowd crush that resulted in eight people being taken to hospital \u2013 four of which were in a critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Ikumelo and Gaby Hutchinson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theticketingbusiness.com\/2022\/12\/20\/second-person-dies-following-brixton-o2-academy-crush\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later died from their injuries<\/a> while a third still remains in hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Following the incident, the venue\u2019s license was suspended until January 16. A spokesperson for Academy Music Group \u2013 which runs Brixton Academy \u2013 said that the venue would stay closed voluntarily until April to accommodate police investigations.<\/p>\n<p>A recent Lambeth Council meeting saw the venue\u2019s license remain suspended for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theticketingbusiness.com\/2023\/01\/16\/brixton-o2-academy-set-to-remain-closed-for-further-three-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another three months<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/jan\/27\/inquest-into-deaths-at-brixton-o2-could-lead-to-criminal-charges-court-hears?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> reported that an inquest had been opened into the deaths of Ikumelo and Hutchinson on Friday at London Inner South coroner\u2019s court.<\/p>\n<p>DCI Penney said that his team had begun \u201ca huge investigation\u201d which was set to be \u201ca vast and complicated process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Police are reportedly tracking down and approaching witnesses, and searching through hours of CCTV footage.<\/p>\n<p>Penney also told senior coroner Andrew Harris that there was a \u201cstrong possibility of criminal charges\u201d being made at a later date, after Harris asked about the potential of homicide being ruled in connection to the deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Harris also granted permission for the inquest to be suspended while investigations continued.
