{"id":4267,"date":"2023-04-27T07:56:07","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T14:56:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.goticketly.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/27\/us-senators-introduce-legislation-to-improve-competition-in-the-ticketing-markets\/"},"modified":"2023-04-27T07:56:07","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T14:56:07","slug":"us-senators-introduce-legislation-to-improve-competition-in-the-ticketing-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.goticketly.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/27\/us-senators-introduce-legislation-to-improve-competition-in-the-ticketing-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senators introduce legislation to improve competition in the ticketing markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"primary\">\n<p class=\"standfirst\">US Senator Amy Klobuchar, chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust and Consumer Rights, and Senator Richard Blumenthal, have introduced legislation to improve competition within the live event ticketing markets. <\/p>\n<p>A press release stated: \u201cToday\u2019s primary ticketing market is dominated by one company that by some estimates has locked up 70 to 80% market share and has used its dominance to pressure venues to agree to ticketing contracts that last up to ten years, insulating it from competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Unlock Ticketing Markets Act\u2019 would help to restore competition by empowering the Federal Trade Commission to prevent the use of excessively long multi-year contracts that lock out competitors, according to the Senators.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Klobuchar and Blumenthal also argue that these long contracts decrease incentives to innovate new services and increases the cost for music fans.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Klobuchar and Senator Mike Lee, chair and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust and Consumer Rights, organised a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theticketingbusiness.com\/2023\/01\/25\/us-lawmakers-and-stakeholders-lambast-live-nation-ticketmaster\/%C2%A0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Judiciary Committee hearing<\/a> after Ticketmaster struggled under the weight of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theticketingbusiness.com\/2022\/11\/18\/ticketmaster-cancels-taylor-swift-general-on-sale-issues-explanation-into-chaos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Swift fans<\/a> vying for Eras Tour tickets.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In February, Klobuchar and Lee sent their evidence from the hearing to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and called on the DOK to continue its examination of Ticketmaster and owner Live Nation\u2019s anticompetitive conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the committee hearing, Klobuchar wrote to Ticketmaster in November expressing concern over the lack of competition, and asking the ticketing company if it was taking necessary steps to provide the best service it could for consumers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Klobuchar said: \u201cRight now, one company is leveraging its power to lock venues into exclusive contracts that last up to ten years, ensuring there is no room for potential competitors to get their foot in the door.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout competition to incentivize better services and fair prices, we all suffer the consequences. \u2018The Unlock Ticketing Markets Act\u2019 would help consumers, artists, and independent venue operators alike by making sure primary ticketing companies face pressure to innovate and improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal added: \u201cConsumers deserve protection against the clear excesses and abuses of Ticketmaster repeatedly demonstrated in their own lives and documented in Congressional hearings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is a step toward basic fairness that everyone deserves \u2013 consumers, artists, venues, and others \u2013 against a sad and repugnant history of putting its profits above them.
