Backstage: Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys and more


A round-up of the latest live music news…

Ed Sheeran has cancelled a tour date at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light after agreeing to appear at the Queen’s jubilee pageant outside Buckingham Palace.

The British star was due to play three consecutive nights of his +-=÷x tour at the venue, but will now miss the June 2 date. It was announced earlier this week that Sheeran will feature in the platinum jubilee People’s Pageant, taking place in London on June 5.

Organisers said ticket holders for the June 2 show will be accommodated at one of the other two shows.

Arctic Monkeys, Travis Scott and Bjork will headline at Primavera Sound’s South American debut, which is to be held in three countries later this year.

Primavera Sound São Paulo will run from October 31 to November 6 at Distrio Anhembi in the Brazilian city. Primavera Sound Santiago in Chile and Primavera Sound Buenos Aires in Argentina will run concurrently between November 7 and 13 at Parque Bicentenario Cerrillos and Parque de los Niños.

Jack White, Pixies and Lorde will also perform at the South American dates of the festival which launched in Barcelona more than 20 years ago. Primavera Sound will also debut in Los Angeles this year.

Maroon 5 have announced the next leg of their world tour with dates across major venues in North America.

Live Nation said the three-time Grammy winners, who begin the tour in the UAE in May, will play a number of venues across the US and Canada between July and August.

They open at the Moda Center in Portland on July 30, finishing at QC Bell Centere in Montreal on August 20.

Spotify and LiveNation presales commenced on April 27 at 10am local time followed by local presales on April 28 at 10 am local time.

American rock band Kings Of Leon will return to Australia in late 2022, following the indefinite postponement of their planned tour earlier this year.

The tour will now take place between October and November, taking in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, as well as Mildura, a regional city in the northwest of Victoria.

Veteran American band B-52s have announced a farewell tour for this summer which will close in Atlanta, close to their hometown of Athens, Georgia.

The band – famous for hits like ‘Love Shack’ – begin the tour in Seattle in August, with the final show in November.

B-52s co-founder Kate Pierson said: “Who knew what started as a way to have some fun and play music for our friends’ at house parties in Athens in 1977 would evolve into over 45 years of making music and touring the world. It’s been cosmic.”
