Sam Fender cancels performances to focus on mental health

Sam Fender has cancelled a number of upcoming shows in order to concentrate on his mental health.

The British artist has cancelled his three remaining headline shows in the US, shows with Florence and the Machine and a performance at Life is Beautiful festival. His rescheduled appearances at UK record stores will also be affected.

In a statement on social media and referring to himself and his band, Fender said that they were “burnt out” and needed this time away from performing and travelling.

“It seems completely hypocritical of me to advocate discussion on mental health and write songs about it if I don’t take the time to look after my own mental health,” Fender wrote in his post.

“I’ve neglected myself for over a year now and haven’t dealt with things that have deeply affected me. It’s impossible to do this work on myself while on the road, and it’s exhausting feigning happiness and wellness for the sake of business. My friends and colleagues have been worried about me for a while and it’s not going to get better unless I take the time to do so.”

Fender recently announced an additional show at Newcastle’s St James’ Park after the first date sold out in minutes. The singer also said that shows in Australia in late November will not be affected and that he was “super excited” for these performances.

“I can’t express how grateful we are to have such an awesome fan base,” he added.

“Thank you for always sticking by us.”
