2022 in review – December

Glastonbury Festival organisers announced in early December that Sir Elton John will be headlining the event in 2023, which will be the iconic singer’s last UK performance on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Sir Elton will be closing the festival on Sunday June 25 with a lively performance on the Pyramid Stage.

A new event ticketing standard was introduced by the Australian Government to help ticket buyers make informed decisions when purchasing tickets from online resellers. The new changes will complement the Western Australia (WA) Ticket Scalping Act, which came into effect in September 2021.

Ticketmaster Mexico came under fire in December, as Bad Bunny fans were turned away from a concert in Mexico City at the 87,000-capacity Estadio Azteca. Fans reported that their tickets were called fake or duplicated by security, or had been cancelled by Ticketmaster. In a statement on Twitter, Ticketmaster Mexico said: “Ticketmaster apologises to fans and announces refunds to legitimate ticket-holders who were unable to access today’s Bad Bunny concert.”

Two ticket touts that resold tickets for concerts from artists such as Ed Sheeran were ordered to repay over £6m ($7.4/€7m), or face an extra eight years in prison. Peter Hunter and David Smith, who traded as Ticket Wiz and BZZ, were convicted in February 2020 after being found guilty of fraudulent trading in relation to the resale of tickets for concerts, major sporting events and West End shows.
