A festival in Spain was called to a halt after a stage collapsed due to high winds, resulting in one death and at least 40 injuries.
Medusa Festival in Spain was ended early on Saturday morning after winds, reportedly exceeding 80km per hour, caused a stage to collapse. It was due to run until today (Monday).
The electronic dance music festival was being held in the east coast province of Cullera, near Valencia, and had started on Wednesday before the incident and subsequent cancellation.
According to the Associated Press, around 40 people were attended to by emergency services with three being treated in hospital for serous injuries. The BBC reported the man that died was in his 20s.
In a statement on social media, organisers of Medusa Festival said: “It’s a very painful moment. Difficult and heartbreaking. A terribly sad and disheartening moment for relatives, friends. A moment no one should ever know.
“It’s also the hardest moment we ever thought about going through all of us who form Medusa Festival. We continue to be sad. Broken inside. As much as the words almost don’t come out. Our thoughts continually occupy each and every one of those affected, directly and indirectly, by the unfortunate, unexpected and inevitable accident that has occurred tonight due to the extreme and unpredictable inclement of time during the celebration of Medusa Festival.”
