Chandigarh Administrator, Banwarilal Purohit, has launched a new app that unifies the ticketing system for tourist spots across the Indian city of Chandigarh.
Purohit is also the Governor of Punjab and developed the app in conjunction with India’s Tourism Department.
Users operating both Android and iOS systems will be able to download the app, which will contain a QR code with a single ticket for multiple tourist hot spots.
Across the city of Chandigarh, the app can be used for tourist attractions such as boating at Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden (pictured), Bird Park, museums and the ‘hop on, hop off’ tour bus.
It is hoped that access to the app and utilising single ticketed entry for multiple attractions will limit queueing.
The department is also aiming to develop the app further to include permission for film shooting and the ability to book food at tourist spots.
A ‘pay-as-you-wish’ ticketing scheme has been considered for tourism in other parts of India.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture presented a proposal to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), an agency attached to the Ministry of Culture, to consider the scheme.
The ASI is responsible for more than 3,650 ancient monuments, sites and remains across India such as temples, mosques, churches, tombs and palaces.
The agency also considered a special discount for young international tourists, as well as weekly passes for domestic and foreign travellers to encourage multiple visits to historical sites.
