Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet has revealed plans to sell a record-breaking three million tickets for the Paralympic Games in the French capital.
The Paris Paralympics are due to take place from August 28 to September 8, 2024 with the Olympics scheduled to run from July 26 to August 11.
In an interview with the Reuters news agency, Estanguet confirmed that three million tickets will be made available for the Paralympics, with the organising committee planning a “very ambitious” ticketing programme.
The three million figure would surpass the 2.7 million tickets sold for London’s Paralympics in 2012 and Estanguet is hoping to deliver a memorable Games for fans attending the event in Paris.
“I’m convinced that it is an event that’s unrecognised, that must (be) positioned among the top three sporting events in the world,” Estanguet told Reuters. “The ticketing will be approached in the same way as the Olympic Games. We want it to be full and to be a total experience.”
Estanguet hopes the Games will change the perception of Paralympic sport in France and feels it is the organising committee’s “mission” to educate people. France has aligned its Olympic and Paralympic teams as a single entity for the 2024 Games in a move designed to promote athletes with disability.
Paris 2024 is also planning on selling nine million tickets for the Olympics, which will take place at a range of venues across the city and outside of the capital.
No spectators were permitted at this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo due to ongoing restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Beijing is set to host the winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in February and March next year, and there are plans to allow Chinese fans to attend.
