FC Barcelona Femení’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg tie against Real Madrid, at the Camp Nou in March, is set to smash records for the number of attendees watching a women’s football match.
Over 70,000 tickets have now been issued or purchased for the game, which is already set to be the record attendance for a women’s match in Spain, as well as the highest attendance for a women’s club match across the globe. The current record for both feats is 60,739, which was set when Barcelona beat Atlético Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in 2019.
The current ticket sales figure is mostly due to the fact that FC Barcelona members – of which there are around 147,000 – have been able to claim up to four free tickets each, with a small administration fee.
The team stated that this was “in order to encourage a higher attendance and to enable members to go to the game with family or friends”.
Barcelona members snapped up around 35,600 of the 70,000 tickets, which were then put on general sale on January 13.
At present, there are restrictions in place in Spain, meaning the capacity at Camp Nou – which can hold up to 99,354 spectators – would be limited to 70,000. With the limit in place, the match has technically sold out.
If the local Catalan Government removes restrictions, and the full capacity was reached, this would then set an outright world record for a women’s football match, beating the 90,185 that watched the US win the 1999 Women’s World Cup against China.
