An Indian committee has approached government agency the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), to consider introducing a ‘pay-as-you-wish ticketing’ scheme at all ticketed ASI monuments across the country.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture’s proposal noted that a minimum fee should remain in place, but the payment scheme would help to drive tourism and inspire visitors to contribute.
The ASI is responsible for more than 3650 ancient monuments, sites and remains across India. These can include temples, mosques, churches, tombs and palaces.
The committee also suggested that special tours at archaeological sites and monuments be introduced before and after regular hours, allowing for a higher fee to be charged.
The Ministry of Culture promised to examine the technical feasibility of introducing the ‘pay-as-you-wish’ system. However, The Ministry said that the current prices were already “minimal” and a further reduction in prices could be an issue.
Further recommendations from the committee included experimenting with ticket pricing or domestic and international tourists, with the aim of maximising revenue.
The ASI may also consider a special discount for young international tourists as well as weekly passes for both domestic and foreign travellers, to encourage multiple visits to historical sites throughout their trip.
