Hobart Showground to receive revamp

Tasmania’s Hobart Showground is set to undergo a major revamp after funding was agreed between the Tasmanian Liberal Government and Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania.

The redevelopment would see a number of projects undertaken including the delivery of a new showground pavilion, arena, site infrastructure, commercial precinct, large open spaces as well as residential housing.

The final AUD$42.15m (£23m/€28m/$30m) of funding was agreed by the local government and agricultural society to fund the project. Some AUD$1.5bn will be spent on the accompanying housing development over the next 10 years, which will see a minimum of 450 homes built.

The new facilities will cater for the local community, business, sporting tourism and has been designed to accommodate events, activities, shows, trade shows, music and conferences.

Michael Ferguson, Minister for State Development, Construction and Housing, said in a release: “This level of investment will provide significant opportunities for local businesses and suppliers to benefit from the redevelopment.

“I look forward to seeing the project get underway shortly and its completion by early 2025.”
