PGA Tour event to accept cryptocurrency

The Barracuda Championship in California will become the first PGA Tour event to accept cryptocurrency payments, with fans able to purchase tickets, hospitality and sponsorship packages.

Golf fans will be able to pay using over 300 different cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin.

Not only will fans be able to use cryptocurrency to pay for ticket purchases, but the Barracuda Championship is also offering a VIP experience package that will only be available for purchase with cryptocurrency.

The VIP package will include private hospitality, an official tournament Pro-Am team and honorary observer experiences.

The Barracuda Championship will take place July 14-17 at Tahoe Mountain Club in California. Ground tickets for the tournament cost between $35 (£28/€33) and $50.

Major League Baseball’s Oakland A’s, National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks and National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks are just some of the top sports teams in the US that accept cryptocurrency for tickets and merchandise.

Tournament director Chris Hoff said: “We are incredibly excited to take this first step in innovating the sport we all know and love, and to offer our spectators a new way to enjoy the tournament.

“The professional golf landscape continues to innovate and evolve, and we are honoured to usher the PGA Tour into this new space.”
