Wales’ national women’s football team has broken its ticket sales record for an upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier.
Following the conclusion of the record-breaking UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, thousands of Wales fans are set to attend the qualifier against Slovenia at Cardiff City Stadium on September 6.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has set a target of attracting 10,000 attendees to the match. The total number of sales and potential attendance has already beaten the previous record of 5,455, which was set during a match against Estonia in October last year.
Part of the early success in ticket sales has come from a group booking scheme, which has been lapped up by clubs and schools across Wales. Discounted tickets are available for juniors from just £2 and adults from only £6 ($7/€7). The group booking scheme is open until Wednesday August 24.
Wales captain Sophie Ingle said: “I’m so excited that the Red Wall are turning out in their numbers to support us, making history and more noise once again in this World Cup qualifying campaign. It means the world to us as players, we couldn’t do what we do without you.
“The women’s game has had huge exposure with the recent Euros, and we can’t wait to see the effect of that in the Cardiff City Stadium. Hopefully it will be a huge night for Welsh football as we look to reach the play-offs for the first time, we are more motivated than ever.”
The Welsh women’s national team is hoping to reach the World Cup play-off stage for the first time, and requires four points from remaining qualifying matches away to Greece on September 2 and at home against Slovenia.
