Championship rugby league club York City Knights is offering free tickets for key workers in the NHS, police, fire service and the armed forces, as well as teachers.
The Knights’ upcoming match against Workington Town at LNER Community Stadium (pictured) this weekend has been dubbed ‘Heroes Day’.
Not only will the key workers be offered free tickets to attend the game, but also their partners and children.
Matty Lewis, account executive at York City Knights, told the York Press: “At the Knights we pride ourselves with having great community values, and whilst we recognise the importance of many workers, we want to thank those whose roles not only continued throughout lockdown, but also became a lot more demanding.”
LNER Community Stadium is set to host matches for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, including the two women’s semi-final games.
Lewis added: “There are exciting developments ahead at the Knights for men and women, and for those who enjoy rugby league – or if you’ve never experienced a match before – there’s never been a better time to get involved.”
Tickets for Sunday’s clash are still available to purchase with under 16s allowed to enter for free. The club is hoping that a mixture of free tickets and the upcoming World Cup will provide a boost to the sport of rugby league.
Lewis said: “We recognise the importance of the future of the sport, and that’s why we want to continue to invite anyone under the age of 16 for free. It’s a family game, and the atmosphere is always inviting and exciting, so we know it’s a great day out for the whole gang.”
