The Mousetrap, which is the world’s longest-running play, is marking its 70th anniversary today (Friday) and is also set to open on Broadway for the first time next year.
The ‘Whodunit’ play was written by Agatha Christie and was first performed on November 25 1952 at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal. The production went on to become a fixture on London’s West End and has been performed almost 29,000 times.
Some 10 million people have watched The Mousetrap over the last 70 years. The play also celebrated its 50th anniversary (pictured) in 2002.
While the show has been performed in the US before, it has never been staged in New York on Broadway.
The switch to Broadway was partly inspired by a profile boost at the hands of recent murder mystery film, See How They Run. The film is set in 1953 and featured a high-profile cast including Saoirse Ronan, Ruth Wilson, Adrien Brody, David Oyelowo and Sam Rockwell.
Details of the venue and dates for The Mousetrap’s run on Broadway are yet to be announced.
As part of the 70th anniversary celebrations, The Mousetrap has been touring since September and will visit over 70 venues across the UK and Ireland.
