New Year’s events in the metaverse

Many took to the metaverse to ring in the New Year, with events from the likes of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal. ‘The Shaq-tacular Spectacular’ was hosted by the basketball player for an hour on Meta’s metaverse platform, Horizon World. Attendees were able to experience it in virtual reality (VR) using Facebook-owner Meta’s Quest VR headsets. The event featured performances from artists such as Cardi B, Ludacris, Lil Yachty and more.

Live-streamed New Year’s Eve

Outside of the metaverse, New Year’s Eve events took place across the US with many available to live-stream for free to fans. Concerts and performances took place from the likes of Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton, who hosted an event which was streamed through the NBC app and on NBC. Those outside of New York were also able to watch the drop of the Waterford Crystal ball through a live-stream on the Times Square website. Fans of Lizzo were also treated to a ‘Lizzo: Live in Concert’ stream on New Year’s Eve through HBO Max.
