Accra Great Olympics manager Oluboi Commodore has said that the introduction of e-ticketing in the Ghana Premier League has caused some attendances to drop.
According to reports, there have been a series of low turnouts across some stadia for recent games in Ghana’s top flight.
Ghana Soccernet reported that the recent match between Hearts of Oak and Tamale City at the 15,000-capacity Cape Coast Sports Stadium recorded a low attendance, while fellow Ghana Premier League club Asante Kotoko also failed to draw in its usual crowd as Commodore’s Great Olympics at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Commodore told radio station Arkoma FM: “Most fans are facing financial difficulties, aside [from] that, most of the results are determined by referees, and recently e-ticketing is also a major factor for the low attendance.”
The manager also said that a perceived lack of quality players in the league means fans are less inclined to watch games, and that the government should offer a boost in funding to help maintain quality in the league.
“The league lacks quality players because most of our players want to leave after a short season, and teams get pressurised should they decide to block player transfers,” said Commodore.
“The only way to end this low attendance is for the government to block player exodus by enacting and enforcing laws on player exodus. Government must pump enough funds into the league to maintain quality.”
