Kansas City Current has extended its partnership with SeatGeek, which will power ticketing at the first stadium purpose-built for a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side.
The Current’s new stadium is set to open in 2024. The side currently stages its home matches at Children’s Mercy Park, home of Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City.
The club broke ground on the landmark new stadium in October last year, and the venue will have a capacity of 11,500. The stadium is being built at Berkley Riverfront Park at a cost of $117m (£97m/€110m).
New renderings were also released in December, showcasing a view of the stadium’s east stand, which will be branded with the word ‘Current’.
The Current switched to ticketing platform SeatGeek in 2022, a season which saw a 13-match unbeaten streak and more than 10,000 fans attend the club’s match against Angel City FC in August. This broke the franchise record as the highest-attended home match ever.
Current president Allison Howard said: “As we prepare for our move to the first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional soccer team, we want technology that fits the fans in 2023 and caters to our fans in 2024 and beyond.
“We’ve heard great feedback from our supporters about SeatGeek’s app, and we will continue to build on that technology in our own app to level up the matchday experience.”
Jeff Ianello, executive vice-president of client partnerships at SeatGeek, added: “The end-to-end user experience for fans has been overlooked for too long and a lot of the innovation in this area is coming from women’s sports. Our goal is to help the Current make its new stadium a model for fan-friendly innovation by starting with technology first. We can’t wait to make history with the Current in 2024 and beyond.”
