Broadway stats comparable to pre-pandemic levels

Broadway League end-of-season statistics have revealed that some 12.3 million attended shows with grosses reaching $1.58bn (£1.28bn/€1.47bn).

It is the first full season since Broadway returned following a period of COVID-19 pandemic closures, with the statistics covering between May 23, 2022 and May 21, 2023.

The Broadway League, a US trade association for the Broadway industry, released the statistics which showed that total attendance amounted to 12,283,399 and generated $1,577,586,897 in grosses.

The 2022-23 season included 1,474 playing weeks and 11,506 performances.

Statistics also demonstrated that 88.4% of seats were filled, which The Broadway League says is comparable to pre-pandemic levels.

Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, said: “Broadway is making a strong rebound as audiences are returning to New York City to experience extraordinary live theatre.

“The 2022-2023 season numbers indicate an upward trajectory with 12.3 million attendances and nearly $1.6bn in grosses. Broadway continues to present robust and diverse productions ranging from beloved classics to groundbreaking debuts, attracting an array of audiences who are keeping the Theatre District bustling with excitement.”
