Long-running Danish festival Langelandsfestival goes bankrupt

Langelandsfestival, one of Denmark’s longest-running festivals, has filed for bankruptcy.

The annual event was first launched in 1991 and typically took place over four days in late July on Langeland island, in southern Denmark. Some 35,000 people traditionally attended the festival.

In December last year, the festival announced that it would not be happening this year because of financial issues caused by 2022’s 30th anniversary edition.

Festival organisers released a statement earlier this month and said: “Langelandsfestival A/S unfortunately has to announce that the company will be closed down.

“After an extensive search of the market for alternative solutions and several meetings with potential partners and stakeholders, we unfortunately have to conclude that it has not been possible to find a sustainable future for the festival.

“We would also like to inform our business partners and suppliers that there are no eligible invoices that are unpaid at this time.”

The statement added: “We would like to thank our dedicated crew, artists, guests and all those who have supported Langelandsfestival A/S over the years. Although Langelandsfestival A/S closes down, the memories and moments from the festival will always be part of our shared history. Thank you for 30 years – we hope you will all support other festivals and cultural events in the future.”

Langelandsfestival has previously welcomed performances from the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire, Santana, The Corrs, Boyzone, The Doors, East 17, Thin Lizzy, Craig David, Sugarbabes and Rick Astley.
