The England Women’s rugby team not only won a Six Nations grand slam at the weekend, but also attracted a world record attendance for a women’s rugby fixture.
Some 58,498 fans attended the match at London’s Twickenham Stadium to witness the Red Roses beat France 38-33 to take the Women’s Six Nations title. The attendance broke the previous record of 42,579, set at the delayed 2021 Rugby World Cup final last year when England lost to host New Zealand at Eden Park.
Prior to the final, the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand also boasted a record-breaking attendance of 34,235 for the opening matchday at Eden Park.
As reported by the Guardian, England’s captain Marlie Packer said that the goal is to eventually sell out Twickenham, which has a capacity of 82,000.
Packer said: “I want to sell out Twickenham. I believe we can do it and I believe we can do it before 2025 for the World Cup final. Look at today. We weren’t no curtain-raiser. It was all about us.
“I don’t think any of us have played in front of a crowd like that and I’ve been knocking around for a while now. Everything is on the rise so more tickets will be sold and more stadiums will sell out.”
