British Grand Prix sells out in record time

The British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone has sold out all Sunday tickets in the shortest amount of time in the race’s history.

This year’s event is also expected to break all previous British attendance records, with 142,000 race day tickets for the British GP already snapped up. Organisers believe that the Friday and Saturday could also sell out, reflecting a surge in popularity for the sport.

Should all tickets sell out for the race weekend, which is set to take place July 1-3, it will be the first time in the British GP’s history that all three days have sold out. It would also surpass last year’s record attendance of 356,000 spectators.

The race in 2021 was held as part of the UK Government’s Events Research Programme, which looked into holding large-scale events during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some 140,000 watched the race at Silverstone last year, marking the biggest event to be held in the UK since the start of the pandemic.

Stuart Pringle, managing director of Silverstone, told the Guardian newspaper: “We have experienced unprecedented demand for tickets for the 2022 Formula 1 British Grand Prix. We have never reached a position of sellout so early in the year.

“We have increased capacity slightly by adding extra grandstand seats and anticipate our race day crowd to reach 142,000 this year. If sales continue at this pace, we expect to be sold out across all three days.”

The recent Australian Grand Prix also broke records for the number of attendees at a Formula 1 event, as 419,000 fans descended on Melbourne for the race weekend.
