The Women’s Euro 2022 final welcomed a record-breaking crowd to watch England triumph over Germany at Wembley yesterday (Sunday).
Some 87,192 spectators were present to watch Chloe Kelly score an extra time winner for England, after the game was tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes. Ella Toone put England in front after 62 minutes but Germany equalised through Lina Magull in the 79th minute.
The final’s major attendance brought the aggregate attendance for the entire tournament, which was held in stadia across England, to over half a million.
The previous record for a crowd at a Women’s Euro game was 43,301, which was reached at the 2013 final between Germany and Norway in Solna, Sweden.
This record was shattered in the opening game of the 2022 tournament at Old Trafford in Manchester (pictured), where 68,871 fans watched England beat Austria.
The group stage continued to smash records, including the overall tournament record of 240,055 set at the 2017 edition, which was held in the Netherlands. At the beginning of the knock-out stages, the attendance had reached 357,993.
The final’s attendance of 87,192 also took the tournament’s total to 574,875 with an average crowd of 18,544 per game. This total is almost double that of the previous competition.
It also beat the previous record for a women’s national team match in Europe, 80,203, which was set during a match between the US and Japan at Wembley at the London 2012 Olympics.
Seven of the top 10 Women’s Euro attendances include matches from this year’s tournament.
