Ghana opts for e-ticket platform for football games

Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has launched an e-ticketing platform to make it easier for football fans to purchase match tickets online for numerous venues across the country.

Ussif unveiled the e-ticket platform recently at the 40,528-capacity Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Ashanti before Ghana’s World Cup play-off first leg against Nigeria.

According to the Ghanaweb news site, Ussif said: “It is very exciting. Now our spectators can buy tickets online and access our sporting facilities without any challenges. This digital innovation has come to stay.”

In the 48 hours following the platform’s introduction, over 20,000 tickets were sold with tickets eventually selling out around eight hours before the Nigeria game. Ghanaweb also reported that the e-ticketing platform generated around GHC1.4m (£140,300/€166,160/$184,314) worth of sales for the Ghana vs Nigeria match, which ended in a goalless draw.

The second leg is set to take place in Nigeria at Moshood Abiola National Stadium this evening (Tuesday), as the two nations battle for World Cup qualification ahead of the event in Qatar later this year.

This new e-ticketing portal will cater for all national games going forward. The platform will eventually serve the country’s Premier League ticketing services, which will also be utilised for a number of stadia around Ghana.

Ussif added: “Onwards, anybody accessing the stadium, whether it is a national team game or the Premier League, once it is a Government facility, will be accessing it through the e-ticket platform, which is a policy of the Government.”
