FC Barcelona hosts world-record women’s football crowd

A record 91,553 attended last night’s UEFA Women’s Champions League game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

The crowd figure is the biggest ever for a women’s football match, and dwarfs the 86,000 attendance for this season’s El Clasico between Barca’s men’s team and Real Madrid.

The match sold out quickly after free tickets for club members were snapped up two months in advance. The cheapest tickets for non-members were priced at up to €15.

The crowd figure on Wednesday night, when Barca won 5-2 to progress to the competition’s semi-finals, was more than 1,000 greater than the previous women’s football attendance record of 90,185 who watched the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final between the US and China at the Rose Bowl.

The previous highest turnout for a club fixture came in 2019 when 60,739 watched Atletico Madrid versus Barca at Wanda Metropolitano. The previous women’s Champions League record was 50,212 for a game between Lyon and Frankfurt in Munich in 2012.

Reflecting on the attendance and what was an exciting game, Barcelona’s Norwegian international Caroline Graham Hansen said: “This is just too crazy. If we are having fun, people will want to repeat it.”

Barcelona’s women’s team usually play its matches at the much smaller Johan Cruyff Stadium, which holds about 6,000 fans.

Tickets for this year’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 went on general sale last week with just 100 days to go until the tournament in England kicks off. More than half of the 700,000 tickets available have already been sold.
