2022 in review – June

Music, travel and experiences company Pollen’s downward slope to eventual collapse saw 150 members made redundant in the UK and the US. This was despite raising $150m (£123m/€141m) in a Series C funding round in April. June would also see the company fail to pay its workers.

Before Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September, the British monarch celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in June. More than 12 million people tuned in to watch the celebratory concert, which took place at Buckingham Palace. Roughly 22,000 people, including specially invited key workers, attended in person.

Following the Champions League final ticketing fiasco in May, which saw large crowds of Liverpool fans unable to enter the Stade de France in Paris, the French Government’s Olympics envoy recommended the widespread deployment of blockchain ticketing and other enhanced security protocols for events.

Resale site Viagogo rounded off June with a €23.5m (£20m/€25m) fine from Italy’s communications regulatory authority AGCOM for breaking the country’s rules on secondary ticketing. Viagogo was given a week to remove the illegal listings from its site by AGCOM (Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni). An investigation found that Viagogo had listed tickets for 131 events at inflated prices of almost six or seven times more than face-value.
