Arsenal has enjoyed a ticket sales boom for the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League.
The club has sold more tickets for the match with Tottenham than the combined total of its four matches held at the Emirates Stadium (pictured) last season.
More than 40,000 supporters have purchased a ticket for the match, which is set to take place on September 24.
It could be a record for the WSL, with the current best attendance of 38,200 set at the reverse fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.
With the growing popularity of women’s football, in part due to the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory over the summer, more games are being held at stadiums where the men’s teams play.
The WSL’s 2022-23 season will kick off this weekend with Manchester United taking on Tottenham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and reigning champions Chelsea taking on West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
Last season, Arsenal beat both Tottenham and Chelsea in the Women’s Super League at the Emirates, which also hosted Champions League fixtures against Barcelona and Wolfsburg. The total ticket sales for these two matches was 39,393, which is set to be beaten by the upcoming north London derby.
Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham told the PA news agency: “Our supporters have really tapped into the excitement and momentum created during the summer and we are delighted with the phenomenal demand for tickets for this match.”
