Western Australia to require vaccination proof for entertainment venues and events

Western Australia residents will have to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 for indoor entertainment venues, nightclubs, music festivals and live music venues from later this month.

Proof of vaccination is already in place for higher-risk venues in Perth and Peel, but the scheme has now been extended state-wide.

Visitors to indoor establishments such as theatres, concert halls, museums, cinemas and live music venues will have to show a COVID pass from January 31. Those attending attractions such as amusement parks and zoos will also have to show proof.

Music festivals and large events with more than 500 people in attendance will require proof of vaccination before entry is permitted, unless exempt.

As a result of the rule changes, the WA Government has launched the ServiceWA app, which will help residents to demonstrate vaccination requirements. People are also able to show proof via a paper-based form alongside identification if they do not have the app.

Premier Mark McGowan said: “The interim proof of vaccination policy, brought in earlier this month to help us transition out of the backpacker outbreak safely, has been a success.

“Based on the latest health advice, we will be expanding the proof of vaccination requirement to venues throughout WA and adding further higher risk venues to the policy.”

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson added: “Vaccination is our best protection from COVID-19 and we thank Western Australians for doing the right thing and rolling up their sleeves.

“The omicron variant is a game changer and as we head towards our safe transition it is essential that we implement the necessary public health and social measures to protect ourselves.

“Proof of vaccination is one of these important measures and I know businesses and communities across the State will embrace these new measures, just as those in the Perth and Peel regions have done these past few weeks.”
