Vivid Seats data reveals festival trend changes

Fans are willing to travel further to attend music festivals in the US to see their favourite acts, according to data from online ticketing marketplace Vivid Seats.

The data has revealed that the average distance a fan travelled between 2021 and 2022 was 433 miles. This year, Vivid Seats claimed that festival attendees will travel over 800 miles to attend US flagship festival Coachella (pictured) in California.

Vivid Seats also said that festival goers will travel around 420 miles to attend Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee in June.

After two years of cancellations and postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic, the willingness to travel shows a hunger for live performances.

Vivid Seats also revealed that festival music trends were changing, responding to a shift in consumer demand. The online marketplace analysed trends from some of the biggest festivals in the US like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, as well as Bonnaroo.

The platform charted the percentage of each music genre over the years and found that some genres were growing in popularity, like electronic dance music (EDM), with others like rock, were decreasing in popularity.

EDM also has the highest share of artists at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Coachella for 2022.

The data also revealed that since 2014, the rock category has seen a decline across music festivals such as Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. Just 9% of the 2022 Coachella 2022 lineup is made up of rock artists. Bonnaroos holds the highest share of rock acts at 16%.

Hip hop and rap performances have almost doubled at music festivals since 2014, with the 2021-2022 lineups cementing the genre’s popularity. Some 21% of the acts at Lollapalooza are hip hop/rap artists, while 17% and 16% make up the Austin City Limits and Coachella lineups, respectively.
