San Antonio Spurs set to break NBA single-game attendance record

The San Antonio Spurs are set to break the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s single-game attendance record tomorrow night (Friday).

The Spurs will be taking on the Golden State Warriors at the Alamodome – the franchise’s former home – and the team has sold 63,592 tickets for the game. With standing room tickets, the game could boast an attendance of roughly 68,000.

At present, the biggest crowd at an NBA regular season game is 62,046, which was posted during a game between the Chicago Bulls and the Atlanta Hawks at the now-closed Georgia Dome in 1998.

This means that should the number of tickets sold convert into the number of attendees, the game will break a nearly 25-year record.

The largest attendance in league history was 108,713 for the 2010 All-Star Game held at AT&T Stadium, home of the National Football League (NFL)’s Dallas Cowboys.

According to a report from the Associated Press, tomorrow’s game will only be the fourth NBA game with an attendance over 50,000.

The current record for an NBA game at the Alamodome is 39,554, which was posted on June 18, 1999, when the New York Knicks faced the Spurs in Game 2 of that year’s NBA Finals.

The Spurs played at the Alamodome from 1993 until 2002, before the franchise moved to its current home, the 18,500-capacity AT&T Center.
